STOPMOTION ANIMATION

This course was run for Foundation students and a mixed batch of second and third year ‘Digital Media Arts’ students at different time of the academic year. The course encouraged students to tell stories from their personal lives, experiences, travel, interactions, conversations, etc.

Along with applying their learning from previous units such as ‘Visual Scripting’ and ‘Character Design’, a considerable amount of hands on work was a part of this unit. Students were introduced to techniques of character modeling with movable joineries and rigs and building environment sets and props to show setting of the story and characters based on their concept arts and character sheets.

This involved exploring and experimenting with materials like fabrics, paper Mache, found objects, clay, broken scanner, tin sheets, polystyrene, wires, foam sheets, etc to understand the character of the material, it’s functionality and appropriate use.

Experiments with lighting techniques helped to create mood setting and emphasising on emotions and behaviours of characters. Camera worked to create dramatic angles and evoke curiosity in the audience. This understanding enabled students to create and convey believable stories through the stop-motion animations.
